Smaller pulley will spin the alternator faster at idle to create maximum output.  A larger pulley will allow the engine to rev higher without driving the alternator to fast.  Large 3G alternators are safe to ~15,000RPM max.  1-7/8" serp pulley will void alternator warranty claims caused by over revving damage.
